The evolution of eSIM is closely linked to that of 5G. Currently, the average price of a smartphone equipped with an eSIM is around €800. This is because 40% of these devices are also 5G compatible. However, things are changing: Apple and Google have recently introduced eSIM models priced below €500. This threshold is crucial, as half of the operators consider it a determining factor for the widespread adoption of 5G smartphones. In the future, 5G will play a central role in phone upgrades, thus facilitating wider eSIM adoption. Furthermore, future 5G devices will need to maximize space for antennas and batteries, making the elimination of traditional SIM trays essential. This development should also accelerate the arrival of eSIM-only smartphones.
Furthermore, eSIMGo plans to introduce its 5G solutions as early as 2022.
