Network

Network coverage in Mongolia

Between travel, browsing, and messaging, you save time by knowing in advance what the mobile network is like in Mongolia. The nPerf map (https://www.nperf.com/en/map/MN/-/-/signal) compiles field measurements and allows you to compare signal levels and speeds observed by different operators. A good way to adjust your data usage and avoid surprises once you arrive.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

In Ulaanbaatar, eSIM is generally reliable on city buses, especially on major routes. On the Trans-Mongolian Railway or long-distance buses to the Gobi Desert, dropouts are common when crossing poorly covered steppes. Don't expect a continuous signal outside of populated areas.
The network is adequate for everyday use in Ulaanbaatar, with good coverage in the city center and around the airport. In Mongolia, however, quality drops significantly as soon as you travel to the provinces, yurt camps, or certain areas of the Gobi Desert. An eSIM from major local operators like Unitel or MobiCom generally offers the best experience.
Around Ulaanbaatar and on the roads to Kharkhorin or Terelj, navigation works well as long as you stay on well-traveled roads. In Mongolia, long stretches towards the Gobi Desert, Lake Khövsgöl, or secondary tracks can lose signal without warning. Downloading Google Maps offline before you leave is still highly recommended.
Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, the connection often establishes itself a few moments after disabling airplane mode if the eSIM is already installed. The airport's Wi-Fi can help with final adjustments, but it's not always the most convenient option depending on the airport's traffic. The easiest solution is to activate the eSIM just before landing or upon arrival.
For a typical trip to Mongolia, a basic data plan is sufficient if you mainly use Maps, WhatsApp, booking accommodations, and translation services. If you plan on doing a lot of navigation on roads, sharing your connection, or frequently sending photos from the Gobi Desert or the steppe, it's best to opt for a more comprehensive plan. Days without Wi-Fi are common, so it's wise not to pack too small a plan.
Topping up or buying a new data plan is usually done online as long as you still have some internet access. In Mongolia, this becomes more complicated in very remote areas, especially outside of cities or in parts of the Gobi Desert, where the signal can disappear for extended periods. It's best to plan ahead before leaving on a trip and top up as soon as you arrive in Ulaanbaatar or a provincial center.
