On major routes between Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya, the connection is generally sufficient for Waze, Google Maps, and route planning. Interruptions are more likely in mountainous areas, towards the inland Black Sea coast, or on certain isolated sections in Cappadocia and eastern Turkey. For long journeys in Turkey, it's best to download your offline maps before setting off.
You need an eSIM-compatible smartphone that isn't locked to your original carrier. In Turkey, travel eSIMs rely on local networks like Turkcell, Türk Telekom, or Vodafone Türkiye, so a recent phone sold in Europe will usually work without issue if the eSIM is properly supported. If your device comes from a very specific market or a carrier-bundled plan, also check that it's unlocked before buying.
To work from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, or Antalya, an eSIM is often sufficient for messaging, cloud storage, and occasional video calls. Stability is more noticeable in some coastal areas that are very busy during peak season, in Cappadocia (depending on the valley), or in the more rural east. Turkey is a popular destination for digital nomads, but for a full day of continuous video conferencing, good Wi-Fi in a coworking space or apartment remains more comfortable.
If your phone supports dual SIM, you can keep your French SIM active for SMS and use the eSIM for data in Turkey.
