What is an eSIM?
The term eSIM stands for embedded SIM, which refers to an "integrated SIM card" or "built-in SIM card."
Unlike a traditional SIM card that you physically insert into your phone, the eSIM is an electronic chip soldered directly inside your device during manufacturing. It serves exactly the same purpose as a traditional SIM card: allowing your device to identify itself on a mobile network and access telephony and internet services.
The big difference is that everything is managed digitally, without any physical card handling. eSIM technology is standardized by the GSMA (the global association of mobile operators), ensuring interoperability with networks worldwide.
💡 In short: the eSIM is your SIM card, but in software form. Same functions, zero plastic, infinitely more flexibility.
How does an eSIM work?
The eSIM works on a simple principle: where a physical SIM card stores your subscription information on a removable card, the eSIM stores it as digital profiles on a chip integrated into your device.
The operator profile
When you subscribe to an eSIM-compatible plan, your operator provides you with a digital profile: a set of data containing your subscription identifiers (IMSI, security keys, etc.). This profile is downloaded and installed directly onto your device's eSIM chip via a secure internet connection.
Activation and network connection
Once the profile is installed and activated, your device can connect to the operator's mobile network, exactly as if it were using a physical SIM card. You get access to 4G or 5G depending on available coverage, and can make calls, send SMS and use mobile data.
Multi-profile management
One of the major technical advantages of eSIM is its ability to store multiple operator profiles simultaneously. You can have a profile for your regular plan and a profile for a travel destination, switching between them in seconds from your phone settings, without handling any card.
How to install and configure an eSIM?
Installing an eSIM is simple and quick. There are generally three methods depending on the operator and device used.
Via QR Code (most common)
This is the most widespread method. Once your purchase is complete, you receive a QR Code by email or in your operator's app.
- Open your device settings (Network > SIM Card or equivalent)
- Select "Add a plan" or "Add an eSIM"
- Scan the QR Code provided by your operator
- Confirm the installation and wait for network connection
Automatic installation via an app
Some operators offer a mobile app that handles the entire installation process automatically. After purchase, simply download the app, log into your account and follow the instructions. The eSIM is installed in seconds.
Manual activation codes
For devices that don't support QR Code scanning, some operators provide manual activation codes (SM-DP+, activation code and confirmation code) to enter directly in the device settings.
- Your device must be eSIM compatible
- Your device must not be carrier-locked (SIM-lock)
- You need an internet connection during installation
- A QR Code can generally only be used once
The advantages of eSIM
Why are more and more users and travelers switching to eSIM? Here are the concrete reasons.
Freedom and flexibility
Buy and activate a plan from anywhere in the world, in minutes, without queuing or visiting a physical store.
Ideal for travelers
Prepare your connection before even boarding the plane. No more exorbitant roaming fees or searching for a store at the airport.
Multiple plans on one device
Keep your regular number active while using a local eSIM abroad. Both profiles coexist on your device.
Enhanced security
Integrated into your device, the eSIM cannot be removed or swapped without your consent. In case of theft, your operator can deactivate it remotely.
More eco-friendly
Zero plastic, zero packaging. The eSIM is a 100% digital solution that also frees up space to improve your device's water resistance or battery.
Available on multiple device types
Smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops and even some IoT devices: eSIM goes well beyond just phones.
Which devices are eSIM compatible?
eSIM compatibility has expanded considerably in recent years. Nearly all smartphones released since 2018-2019 now integrate the technology.
- Apple iPhone: from iPhone XS (2018) onwards
- Samsung Galaxy: from S20 series (some models)
- Google Pixel: from Pixel 3 onwards
- Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo: several recent models
- Apple Watch Series 3 and above
- Samsung Galaxy Watch
- Garmin (some models)
- iPad Pro, iPad Air (some models)
- Samsung Galaxy Tab (some models)
- PC: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Surface
⚠️ Important: even if your device supports eSIM, make sure it is not carrier-locked ("SIM-locked") by your current operator, which could prevent using an eSIM from another operator.
eSIM vs physical SIM card: what's the difference?
To clearly visualize the differences between the two technologies, here is a comprehensive comparison table.
| Criteria | Physical SIM card | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Removable plastic card | Chip integrated into the device |
| Activation | In store or by mail | Online, instant |
| Carrier switch | Requires a new physical card | Remote, no handling required |
| Multiple profiles | One profile at a time | Multiple profiles simultaneously |
| Compatibility | All devices | Recent smartphones, tablets, watches |
| Risk of loss | Yes (small card easy to lose) | None (integrated into the device) |
| Use abroad | Often requires a 2nd local card | Purchase and activation before departure |
| Environmental impact | Plastic and packaging | Zero plastic, 100% digital |
In summary, eSIM is not here to abruptly replace the physical SIM card overnight. Both still coexist on many devices. But the trend is clearly toward the widespread adoption of eSIM, especially among premium smartphone manufacturers.
